Our families are rich with stories, some we’ve heard so often we feel we experienced them, even when we didn’t. But how many have we yet to learn?

For family elders, remembering and telling these stories is not only a means of revisiting life experience, but a process that energizes the mind and spirit.

For younger generations, family stories create a unique bridge with parents and grandparents, an opportunity to glimpse the fullness and complexity of their elders’ lives.

1937 was a marvelous time in New York. There was the New Theater League, the Theater Union, the Neighborhood Theater and the WPA. Very vigorous and lively. The people were exciting, and everything was happening. They asked me, ‘What name are you going to take?’ They were mostly Jewish, and they were all called things like ‘Evans’ or this, that and the other, and I said, ‘Well, I think I’ll just keep Rosenbaum. It’ll be kind of refreshing in this atmosphere.’

We heard there was going to be a Civil Rights march in town, so we went to see. We just watched, you know, we didn’t march or anything. But the landlord said we were causing trouble and wouldn’t let us stay on our land. That’s why we had to move down here.

In high school, I was in ROTC, because we got our clothes free. That was a big thing in the Depression. We got nice woolen uniforms that we wore every day, so we didn’t have to buy school clothes. And to brag a little bit, in case my children forget it, I was the City High School spelling champion for two years in a row.

I’m undertaking this DVD project, because I never had this kind of information about my parents. Not because they wouldn’t have been forthcoming, but because I would never have thought to ask them.
