The Life Story Interview

Bread & Butter will provide you with a list of questions that will help jog your memory and remind you of stories. Then we’ll get together to shape an outline for the videotaped interview and take a look at any photos or personal artifacts you want to include.
The interview will be informal and conversational, in your home, or another environment where you feel relaxed. It will be recorded on high-quality digital video equipment and later edited together with other visual media and music in your Life Story Video.

The response to our own story, as well as to the stories of others, is Yes. Yes, I have a story.
Yes, I exist.
           - Deena Metzger

I worked as a secretary for almost five years until I got married in June of 1933. Johnny didn’t want me to work. I was going to get another job, and he said, ‘No, honey, you stay home.’ He figured I would join the groups of girls who played cards all the time and shopped all the time, and that just wasn’t my cup of tea. I did it for, oh, a couple of months. I played bridge, I played mahjong ‘till it was coming out of my ears. I just couldn’t take it anymore.

If Herschel was feeling really rich, he’d spend 15 cents for the theater for me, and then there was a drugstore in Oak Cliff that had really good sandwiches for a dime. If he wasn’t, we’d walk up to Fair Park, which was about a mile from the house, and they had a place to get ice cream, three scoops for a nickel. So those were the cheap dates.

At school, we had to wear a middy blouse, bloomers and long black lyle stockings. At the time, I thought that was ridiculous! But now of course I realize that Miss Hockaday really was using good sense, because these girls would have tried to outdress one another and it wasn’t like today when people wear blue jeans and everyone looks alike.

The DVD is a wonderful tribute. It has been a difficult year for losses, and it is good to have the chance to see and remember good times with people who are now gone.
