The response to our own story, as well as to the stories of others, is Yes. Yes, I have a story.
Yes, I exist.
           - Deena Metzger

My father was a scrap dealer, commonly called a junk dealer. I remember during the race riots in Tulsa, 1921, Daddy hid several Black people underneath some of the buildings he had on his property. They were warehouses, and they’d build them about this far off the ground. And he allowed them to hide out in there. The riots were a terrible thing. I remember as a little boy--I was about 5, I think--we would stand on the roof of a little garage and see the flames of Greenwood burning.

I use traditional quilt patterns—double wedding ring, log cabin—but I really like to make up my own. I’ll take any old thing for a pattern. One time I was washing my hands in a friend’s bathroom and just started staring at the tiles on the floor. I liked the pattern, so I copied it with pencil and paper, then made a quilt out of that too.

You wouldn’t believe this to see us now, but my sister absolutely tortured me! She said she was jealous of me; I’m sure she was, because it just happened that she was a painfully skinny little thing and had to wear glasses and braces on her teeth. And I was kind of sassy, and I was a little dancer. She was constantly putting me in my place. But we outgrew all that. Everybody marvels at how close we are now.
I feel as if I have a whole new set of pictures. Now my grandkids get to see them as they were  meant to be seen. It was worth doing for that alone.
